'Refuge' is a typeface designed to be the English counter-part to my father's Urdu poetry from the 80's. Coming across his book originally published in Urdu, I wanted to expand the reach of his poetic tone via an interest in typography. Borrowing from the ornamental, curvilinear nature of Arabic and Persian, and high contrast between the stem weights, Refuge maintains a calligraphic feeling. Specific attention to curved serifs allows for the letters to remain legible yet feel ornamental. The punctuation is used to construct decorative borders to mimic traditional patterns.
